The church was bought by the townspeople of St Albans in 1553 to serve as their parish church after the abbey was closed by the Dissolution of the Monasteries
Whilst it had many features in common with the earlier bill
This threat may have been in response to Napoleon's agreement earlier in the year with Francis Joseph of Austria under the terms of which the pope would become the titular head of a confederation of Italian states
